Commissioning Specialist

Established engineering firm in Missoula, MT is seeking a Commissioning Specialist to join its growing team of structural, mechanical, electrical, and commissioning professionals. The firm provides comprehensive building engineering services for clients across the Western United States, supporting projects ranging from healthcare and education facilities to commercial and high-end residential developments.

This role is ideal for someone with a strong understanding of building systems and performance, along with the ability to troubleshoot and investigate operational issues. The Commissioning Specialist will independently lead field and site work related to new construction commissioning, retro commissioning, and existing building forensic investigations while collaborating with a highly skilled and innovative engineering team.

Commissioning Specialist can work remote or hybrid with a preference living in or near Salt Lake City, UT; Missoula, MT; or St. George, UT. A minimum of 1 week of travel per month is necessary.

Essential Functions and Duties:
  • Develop commissioning plans, QPR documentation and Basis of Design in coordination with the project team
  • Lead functional performance testing from pre-functional checklists through owner handover
  • Maintain the commissioning issues log; track deficiencies through resolution with contractors and the design team
  • Investigate existing building performance issues; prepare findings reports with appropriate professional discretion
  • Conduct retro-commissioning and existing building assessments on assigned projects
  • Manage project scope, schedule, and budget; support proposal development for commissioning and forensic scopes
  • Travel regularly to project sites throughout the Rocky Mountain region: overnight travel is a normal and expected part of this role
  • Mentor the Commissioning Technician and participate in internal company initiatives


Qualifications:
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering plus 5+ years of hands-on commissioning experience, OR 1O+ years of commissioning, TAB, or HVAC field work without a degree
  • CCP (AABC). CxA (ACG). BCxP (ASHRAE/BCA}, or NEBB TAB/BET certification preferred, candidates actively pursuing certification considered
  • Working knowledge of HVAC systems across air-side (RTUs, AHUs, VAV, FCUs) and water-side (chillers, boilers. cooling towers, hydronic systems)
  • Familiarity with BAS/controls platforms (Siemens, Johnson Controls. Trane. Honeywell, or equivalent): ability to navigate a controls sequence and identify faults in functional testing
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE Guideline 0 (commissioning process) and Guideline 1.1 (HVAC&R Technical Requirements) preferred
  • Experience supporting LEED Fundamental and Enhanced Commissioning scopes a plus TAB
