Dry End Mill Superintendent

A family-owned wood products manufacturer that has been in business 70 years is looking for a Mill Superintendent to add to their tight knit team. With over 250 employees, they heavily believe in sustainable forestry, continuous improvement, and respect for people.  Located in beautiful Northeastern Washington it brings a charming small town feel and is a gateway to incredible recreation opportunities such as camping, fishing, hunting, boating, and lots of trails for UTV, snowmobiling, biking etc. It is a true four seasons destination.

Superintendent will oversee the green component of the mill, which includes the log yard and sawmill departments, with a successful handover of the products to the boiler/kiln department. Through leadership, coaching, and mentorship to the team members, superintendent will contribute to the development of future leaders. This position requires an individual who can effectively anticipate and manage the necessary resources, understand the production workflow, work collaboratively with the team to eliminate barriers, and continuously improve operations. The selected candidate will ensure that all departmental objectives are achieved, encompassing safety, production, quality, inventory management, personnel development, and profit margins. 

Essential Functions and Duties:
  • Manages boiler/kilns, planer, shavings bagging, and shipping department Supervisors/Leads and is overall responsible for successful operation of each
  • Reports to the Plant manager and at times the executive team on key performance indicators as well as, project status updates or other departmental successes and or needs
  • Work directly with Human Resources on proper documentation, due diligence, and required team member trainings
  • Understands each machine center in the department and can help troubleshoot production issues
  • Ensures all SOPs for the departments are kept up to date and are signed off by team members
  • Work as a member of our Sales Operations Planning team, providing at least weekly reporting information and being able to anticipate and plan based on other departments needs and expectations
  • Work closely with department supervisors and leads, electrical team, and Maintenance Supervisor and team to provide production efficient maintenance plans and schedules
  • Understands value, including recovery, quality, and production efficiency
  • Coaches and mentors team members to identify and develop excellent operators and future leaders
  • Manages departmental spending through review and approvals of purchase requisitions
  • Managing schedules, timelines and budgets and reporting results to team
  • Works with green end superintendent, plant manager, and CFO to create production plans and forecasts
  • Monitors equipment line efficiency and works with team members for maintaining Company targets and for process improvements
  • Know, Understand, and Apply the Lock-out Tag-out procedures and work with team to develop best practices and designs in new projects for both safety and efficiency


Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of experience in mill operations and management, with direct involvement in the milling process and a strong understanding of its unique challenges
  • Software experience: Microsoft Office Products, industry type optimization software
  • Lean techniques, and 6S experience preferred
  • Self-directed leader, safe leadership record, and can coach, teach, and train others to be leaders
  • Ensure safe work practices & follow safety procedures
  • Demonstrate problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to streamline processes and cut waste within area of responsibility
  • College degree preferred
