The Director of Public Works provides strategic direction for departmental operations, infrastructure management, capital improvement initiatives, budgeting, regulatory compliance, and public safety while exercising independent judgment and collaborating with local leadership, contractors, and the public. Essential Functions and Duties:
- Lead, supervise, and develop Public Works personnel while overseeing daily operations, safety, performance, and emergency response
- Manage departmental operating and capital budgets, strategic planning, infrastructure improvements, and resource allocation
- Direct public works infrastructure projects, including engineering review, bidding, contracting, construction oversight, and regulatory compliance
- Maintain infrastructure records, mapping, and documentation using GIS, AutoCAD, and other asset management systems
- Collaborate with elected officials, government agencies, contractors, consultants, and the public while presenting reports and recommendations to City leadership
- Support grant funding efforts, staff training, policy development, and other departmental initiatives to ensure efficient and compliant public works operations
Qualifications:
- 3+ years of progressively responsible public works experience, including utilities and supervisory leadership
- Strong knowledge of municipal public works operations, civil engineering principles, and applicable laws, regulations, and safety standards
- Excellent communication and analytical skills with the ability to prepare reports and collaborate with staff, elected officials, agencies, and the public
- Proficiency with CAD software, computer applications, and technical tools used in public works operations
- Valid Montana driver’s license (or ability to obtain)
- Ability to earn required Water/Wastewater and Building Permit certifications within two years
